SOWK 291 - BSW Bridge Course

Instructional Method: Three hours lecture.
Prerequisites: Transfer course equivalent for SOWK 101; Associate’s degree in Human Services; permission of BSW Coordinator.
Provides an introduction to social work practice for students transferring from a community college with an Associate’s degree in Human Services. Students’ skills and knowledge of human services will be expanded upon to understand the generalist model and strengths-based perspective, social work values and ethics, the role of diversity and culture in the populations served, the impact of social injustice when working with vulnerable and oppressed populations, and the importance of self-care in the helping profession.  Students will develop skills in critical thinking and scholarly writing essential to their success as a student and professional in the social work field. The generalist model, social work values and ethics, diversity, social and economic injustice of vulnerable populations, and critical thinking skills will be emphasized.
