Foreign Languages Major

Students pursuing a Foreign Languages major choose the Modern Foreign Languages Concentration.

In order to fulfill the REAL Curriculum requirements, students need additional majors and/or minors to fulfill the R, E, A, and L areas.

REAL Cornerstone Requirements

Writing Intensive (WI) Courses (6 credits)

Writing Intensive courses are denoted below with a (WI). Two writing intensive courses are required to graduate, with at least one at the 300- or 400-level.

General Education Requirements

General Education courses will be denoted below with a (GE). Students are required to take at least 30 credit hours of general education designated courses within their degree requirements.

Major Requirements (36-38 credits)

B.A. Requirements (6-8 credits)

Foreign Languages majors fulfill all language requirement for the Bachelor of Arts degree.  Foreign Language majors in the Bachelor of Arts program must also complete either a minor or a second major.

Modern Foreign Language Concentration

Required Courses (30 credits)

Majors must choose one of the following:*

30 semester hours with at least 24 hours above the intermediate level of French, which must include FREN 361 or FREN 362, and at least one course on the 400 level;

or

30 semester hours with at least 24 hours above the intermediate level of German, which must include at least one course on the 400 level;

or

30 semester hours with at least 24 hours above the intermediate level of Spanish, which must include SPAN 320 and at least two courses on the 400 level.

Note(s):

* Students seeking Licensure through the Teacher Education Program (TEP) must choose the Spanish concentration.

Additional Degree Requirements

To graduate with a major in Foreign Languages and Literatures, a student must have a grade point average of 2.0 or higher in all courses attempted in the major.

Open Credit Hours (82-84 credits)

These credits can be used to fulfill additional courses, majors, minors, and/or REAL Curriculum requirements, including Foundational Writing and Foundational Math.
