Undergraduate Program

The Department of Chemistry is an American Chemical Society (ACS) approved program.  The Department of Chemistry offers a broad curriculum leading to a Bachelor of Science degree with Advanced Professional Chemist, Professional Chemist, Biochemistry:  Life Sciences and Pre-Health, Advanced Biochemistry, and Forensics concentrations available. Students in the Advanced Professional Chemist and Advanced Biochemistry concentrations will receive ACS approved degrees.  Depending upon the particular course of study taken, the students will be prepared for a career in industry, government, or education. A wide variety of career opportunities are available to persons trained in chemistry. Chemists work in research, industrial production, quality control, sales, management, environmental control, safety engineering, science reporting, teaching, and many other areas. Training in chemistry is also a valuable background for such professions as medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, and environmental and patent law. Many students who enter medical and dental schools do their undergraduate work as chemistry majors. Chemistry majors are required to take courses in general, analytical, organic, and physical chemistry, as well as biology. Students are encouraged to take advanced elective courses in the five areas of chemistry. Pre-medical and pre-dental students enrolled in the Pre-Health Professional Concentration take additional biology courses to prepare for these careers. Students may also pursue licensure to teach chemistry in the Bachelor of Science degree program.

Pre-pharmacy Program

Students who wish to enter a pharmacy school should register as chemistry majors; a designated faculty member from the department will be assigned to advise prepharmacy students.
