Athletic Training (M.S.A.T)

The purpose of the Athletic Training program at Radford University is to provide students with the opportunity to earn an entry level degree in athletic training, which will allow students to sit for the Board of Certification for Athletic Trainer’s (BOC) examination.  Athletic Trainers are recognized by the American Medical Association as allied health care professionals, and they are involved in the treatment of people of all ages. They prevent, assess, treat and provide rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries.  In addition, they are often first to provide immediate care and treatment of injury.  Athletic trainers work under the supervision of physicians to provide health care for clients in multiple settings including high schools, universities, hospitals, rehabilitation clinics and physician offices.   

Radford University’s athletic training program focuses on preparing students to become exceptional clinical athletic trainers in a variety of work settings.  As part of their preparation, students will complete two years of intensive clinical preparation.

Admission Requirements

Admission to the athletic training program is competitive. Applicants that demonstrate the following are more likely to be admitted:

  • Strong reasoning and writing skills
  • Completion of prerequisite courses with a grade of B- or better before the start of the program
  • Work or volunteer experiences with diverse populations of physically active population including scholastic athletes, club sports, youth sports and work with older athletes.
  • A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 in all undergraduate and/or graduate coursework
  • A demonstrated record of successful professional and interpersonal skills, as demonstrated through references and exhibited during an on-site interview.
  • One cohort is admitted to each campus location for the Radford University MSAT program each year. All applications are submitted to gradadmit@radford.edu and are screened for accuracy and completeness before being forwarded to the AthleticTraining Program Admissions Committee for a comprehensive review. 
  • Application deadline for submission is October 30.
  • Qualified candidates may be invited to participate in a mandatory interview with the MSAT Interview Panel.

Prerequisites for Admission to the M.S.A.T. Program

  • Verification of 50 clock hours of observation with a Certified Athletic Trainer (A.T.C.). This will be provided on a standard form that the ATC can download, print, complete and sign verifying clock hours.
  • Official GRE scores – 150 verbal, 144 quantitative (minimum combined score of 294).
  • Three letters of recommendation (preferably from a supervising certified athletic trainer, supervising health professional, employer, or professor).
  • A grade of B- or better in the following prerequisite courses (please see list below).  Please note that if you attended Radford University as an undergraduate student, you may refer to the specific Radford University equivalent course list for suggested prerequisite courses.
    • Anatomy and Physiology                 8 credits
    • Biomechanics or Kinesiology           3 credits
    • Exercise Physiology                          3 credits
    • Nutrition                                            3 credits
  • These prerequisites are required at a grade of C or better.
    • General Biology                               4 credits
    • Chemistry I                                       4 credits
    • Physics I                                           4 credits
    • Introduction to Psychology             3 credits
    • Math (college algebra or above)     3 credits
    • Statistics                                           3 credits
  • 12 credits from the following courses:
    • Chemistry II                                      4 credits
    • Human Growth and Development   3 credits
    • Introduction to Athletic Training     3 credits*
    • Strength and Conditioning              3 credits
    • Ethics                                                3 credits
    • Measurement and Evaluation          3 credits
    • Research Methods                           3 credits
    • Upper Division Psychology             3 credits
    • Upper Division Health                     3 credits

*This course, if taken, requires a B or better
