Geospatial Intelligence Certificate

The Baccalaureate Certificate in Geospatial Intelligence (GEOINT) prepares students to enter the geospatial intelligence field. Students will develop knowledge directly related to the core competencies of the Geospatial Technology Competency Model developed by the U.S. Department of Labor and the U.S. Geospatial Intelligence Foundation (USGIF). The program focuses on geospatial problem-solving skills, data fusion, geospatial technologies, and applications of these to disaster response, emergency management, infrastructure and resource management, military and policy operations, big data analysis and cyber security. Students completing the certificate program will be able to use the geospatial analysis techniques, skills and tools to derive meaningful information from geospatial data, solve geospatial intelligence problems in multiple situations and communicate their findings in a professional manner to both professional and public audiences.

Curriculum Requirements (19-23 credits)

The curriculum consists of five content areas, including a core course covering the fundamentals of geographic information systems and concepts of space, representation, spatial reasoning and map use; spatial data analysis; data management and visualization; special topics in geospatial intelligence; and a capstone experience in which students demonstrate the ability to apply GEOINT knowledge, skills, and techniques to a national security problem and communicate findings in a professional manner.

All applicants must have completed Introduction to Geospatial Data (GEOS 125) and Introduction to Geographic Information Systems (GEOS 250/ITEC 250) each with a minimum letter grade of “B”, or demonstrate competencies for GEOS 125 and GEOS 250/ ITEC 250 through a prior learning assessment (PLA). Students must maintain a cumulative B average in all core and elective program courses, and no grade lower than a C on any single program course.

The certificate program will consist of 19-22 credit hours of undergraduate-level coursework.  The curriculum includes four credit hours of core coursework and 15-18 hours of restrictive electives.  At least one course must be taken in each of the three restrictive elective areas.  The fourth course can be from any of the three restrictive elective areas.

Choose 4 courses (12-16 credits):

Students must take four courses in the following three areas.  At least one course must be taken from each of the areas.  The fourth course can be from any of the three areas.

Spatial Data Analysis

Introduces students to spatial data analysis, spatial statistics, modeling and techniques for processing and analyzing remote sensing data.

Special Topics in Geospatial Intelligence

Focuses on special topics in the geospatial intelligence industry.

Capstone Experience (3 credits)

Provides experiential learning opportunities combined with a culminating capstone experience through which students can synthesize and apply the understandings and tools gained in fulfilling the other area requirements. (Choose from the following with approval of advisor.)
