Applied Mathematics Concentration

The major is available with a choice of three concentrations: Applied Mathematics, Statistics, and Traditional Mathematics.

Core Curriculum Requirements (43-46 credits)

Three or four hours of mathematics courses required for the major may be included as part of the 43-46 hour Core Curriculum requirement.

A grade of at least a “C” is required in each course in the calculus sequence. Any departmental majors receiving credit for MATH 271 cannot subsequently receive credit for any 100-level mathematics course unless the course is required for their concentration.

Concentrations

Applied Mathematics Concentration (24 - 26 credits)

Electives:

Three credit hours chosen from the following:

Any 300- or 400-level mathematics or statistics course, with the exception of MATH 325 ; ITEC 122 , or any ITEC course numbered 200 or above, with the exception of ITEC 202 , ITEC 250 and ITEC 281 ; any physics course numbered 300 or above; any chemistry course numbered 200 or above.

B.S. Requirements (8 credits)

Statistics Concentration (18 - 19 credits)

Electives:

Three additional hours chosen from among 300- or 400- level Statistics courses.

B.S. Requirements (6 - 8 credits)

To satisfy the B.S. requirement students must take at least six hours from the following courses:

MATH 434 - Numerical Analysis I
MATH 435 - Numerical Analysis II
PHYS 221 - Physics
PHYS 222 - Physics
PSYC 301 - Analysis of Psychological Data
PSYC 302 - Research Methods in Psychology
MGNT 333 - Business Analytics for Decision Making
ECON 321 - Econometrics
any biology course, any chemistry course.

Traditional Mathematics Concentration (18 credits)

Electives:

Nine additional credits from any 300- or 400-level mathematics or statistics course with the exception of MATH 325 . Students who wish to pursue Secondary Education Licensure must take MATH 321 , MATH 335 , and MATH 412 as elective courses.

Note(s):

Students who wish to pursue Secondary Education Licensure must take MATH 321 , MATH 335 , and MATH 412 . Students must also take the appropriate education courses including HUMD 300 , EDEF 320 and ‘the block’ (EDSP 404 , EDRD 416 , EDUC 440 , EDET 445 , and EDUC 441 ). Students seeking licensure to teach at VA schools must also take EDUC 442 and EDUC 452 .

Graduation Requirements

To graduate with a major in Mathematics, a student must have a grade point average of 2.0 or higher in all required MATH, STAT, ITEC, and PHYS courses for the Applied Mathematics Concentration; MATH, STAT and ITEC courses for the Statistics Concentration; MATH and STAT courses for Traditional Mathematics.
