Information Science and Systems, B.S.



Students seeking the Bachelor of Science in Information Science and Systems must complete the University’s Core Curriculum requirements, the Degree Core Requirements, the Bachelor of Science Requirements and the courses required for at least one of the concentrations. Students must also complete any necessary electives to reach at least 120 credit hours.  Students must choose from at least one of the concentrations within the major: Healthcare Information Systems, Information Systems and Decision Sciences, Information Systems and Web Development, or Information Systems Security.

The Healthcare Information Systems concentration is designed to provide graduates with a background in information technology fundamentals, business fundamentals, and specific knowledge in healthcare information systems so that the graduate can pursue a career in managing, and supporting information technology within the healthcare industry.

The Information Systems and Decision Science concentration is designed to provide graduates with a background in information technology fundamentals, business fundamentals, and specific knowledge in the area of decision sciences including business intelligence so that the graduate can pursue a career in managing and supporting information technology within a variety of organizations.

The Information Systems and Web Development concentration is designed to provide graduates with a background in full-stack development with a focus on web applications, creating and using web-services, and product integration.  These skills will help graduates pursue a career in managing and supporting information technology within a variety of organizations.

The Information Systems Security concentration is designed to provide graduates with a background in information technology fundamentals, business fundamentals, and specific knowledge in securing information systems so that the graduate can pursue a career in securing, managing, and supporting information technology within a variety of organizations.

Core Curriculum Requirements


Some major requirements meet Core Curriculum requirements and students are advised to take them as part of their Core Curriculum requirements.

*Students in the Healthcare Information Systems concentration must take BIOL 105  to meet the Natural Sciences Core Curriculum requirement.

*Students in the Healthcare Information Systems Concentration must take BIOL 310  to satisfy 4 credits of the B.S. Requirement.

Students should consult with their academic advisors in selecting elective courses to complete the 120 semester hours required for graduation.

Major GPA Requirement


All majors require a minimum 2.0 GPA in the major in order to be eligible for graduation. The major GPA for all concentrations is calculated using all courses required for the Degree Core Requirements and courses taken for the concentration(s) selected.  Many courses require a “C” or better in the prerequisite. (See “Course Descriptions” section).
