Health and Exercise Science Concentration (A, L)


The Health and Exercise Science Concentration allows students to couple their interest in Fitness and/or Health Promotion with another cognate based on their career goals. The program is highly customizable and allows students to pursue graduate school or employment as exercise physiologists, health educators, or human performance specialists.

REAL Curriculum


This major fulfills the A and L areas of the REAL Curriculum. In Health and Exercise Science, students will analyze influences (physical, social, environmental, cultural, etc.) on health and aging. Students will apply knowledge and skills through case studies and during required fieldwork in practice settings to develop their professional competence. Students will reflect on their abilities in the field to develop a professional identity. Students need majors and/or minors to fulfill the R and E areas to complete the REAL Curriculum requirements.

Writing Intensive (WI) Courses (6 credits)

Writing Intensive courses are denoted below with a (WI). Two writing intensive courses are required to graduate, with at least one at the 300- or 400-level. The Health and Exercise Science concentration includes 0-6 credits of writing intensive courses.

General Education Requirements


General Education courses will be denoted below with a (GE). Students are required to take at least 30 credit hours of general education designated courses within their degree requirements. The Health and Exercise Science concentration includes a minimum of 20 general education credits.

Cognate Options


Students must complete two of the four cognate options below.  One of the cognates completed must be either the Fitness, Strength and Conditioning or the Health Promotion option.

Students will choose one additional cognate. They may select from the two cognates above (whichever one they have not already chosen) or from the two additional cognates below.

Additional Degree Requirements


A 2.0 cumulative, and in major, grade point average is required for fieldwork and graduation for this concentration. Refer to the fieldwork manual for additional information and requirements for fieldwork.

Open Credit Hours (46 credits)


These credits can be used to fulfill additional courses, majors, minors, and/or REAL Curriculum requirements, including Foundational Writing and Foundational Math.

Physical and Health Education Teacher Education Concentration (R, L)


This program of study prepares students to teach physical education and health education to young people in grades K-12. Students in this program earn a BS degree and a license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia. To be admitted to the Professional Education Program, a student must meet minimum requirements for admission. Graduates obtain positions as teachers of physical and health education in schools and/or directors of community-based physical activity programs for youth. (See teacher education program in College of Education and Human Development  admissions requirements).

REAL Curriculum


This major fulfills the R and L areas of the REAL Curriculum. Students will set objectives and develop, implement and evaluate data from lessons to inform their teaching practice. Throughout the curriculum, students apply requisite knowledge and skills for teaching in K-12 classroom settings. Students regularly reflect upon and work to improve their skills as a teacher.  Coursework required in the major will fulfill an “A” REAL studies minor. Students need a minor to fulfill the E area to complete the REAL Curriculum requirements.

In addition to the Foundation Courses listed above, 15 additional hours of courses in the College of Education and Human Development are required for licensure to teach in the State of Virginia.

Additional Degree Requirements


A 2.5 overall GPA and a 2.5 major GPA are required for admission to the teacher education program and student teaching. See the teacher education admission requirements and procedures.

These credits can be used to fulfill additional courses, majors, minors, and/or REAL Curriculum requirements, including Foundational Writing and Foundational Math.

Additional Information


A Driver’s Education add-on endorsement can be received upon completion of HLTH 410  and HLTH 412  if the candidate is licensed in Secondary or K-12.

Students must complete specific courses (i.e., ESHE 307 , ESHE 371 , ESHE 380 , ESHE 384 , ESHE 386 , and HLTH 382 ) at Radford University.

Driver’s Education Add-On Endorsement


A Driver’s Education add-on endorsement can be received upon completion of HLTH 410  and HLTH 412  if the candidate is licensed in Secondary or K-12.
