Women’s and Gender Studies Minor (A)

The Women’s and Gender Studies Minor provides an interdisciplinary and global perspective on women, their contributions to society, the effects of systemic inequalities on their lives, and their activism to create social change. It affords students a solid grounding in critical thinking concerning gender as an analytic category. Graduates have either gone on to graduate programs or have found related work in fields such as education, social services, healthcare, and counseling.

REAL Curriculum
This minor fulfills the A area of the REAL Curriculum and fulfills the learning goal: To examine the context and interactions of culture(s) and/or behavior(s). Students fulfill the learning outcomes in this area: describe behaviors, beliefs, cultures, social institutions, and/or environments and analyze the interactions of behaviors, beliefs, cultures, social institutions, and/or environments. Students need majors and/or minors to fulfill the E and L areas to complete the REAL Curriculum requirements.

General Education courses will be denoted below with a (GE). Students are required to take at least 30 credit hours of general education designated courses within their degree requirements. The Women’s and Gender Studies minor includes 3 general education credits.

Students select any additional two of the following courses. Courses in this category may also be listed above. To complete the minor, students must select 12 unique elective hours. Of those 12 hours, course prefixes must be from at least two different academic disciplines beyond WGST.
Note(s):
In some semesters, courses including, but not limited to, ARTH 414 , ARTH 431 , ENGL 414 , ENGL 470 , HLTH 450 , MGNT 471 , MKTG 471 , NURS 450 , SOCY 495 and SOWK 480 , may focus on the study of women or gender issues. When this is the case, they will be eligible for inclusion in the minor. Special topics 490 courses and independent studies 498 courses focusing on women can, with approval, be used to fulfill electives. Not more than six of the 12 elective hours may be 290, 490 and/or 498 courses. In addition, any course with a significant focus on women and gender may be approved by the Director for a student’s program of study in the Minor.
