Professional Writing Minor (E)

Write clearly and well for various audiences, design content for publication, edit for style and consistency, and help local non-profits or businesses through internship or real-world application of your skills. Learn to create various types of non-academic documents for both print and digital environments, such as proposals, grants, reports, brochures, instructions, website content, and blogs, to name a few.

REAL Curriculum

This minor fulfills the E area of the REAL Curriculum. Students explore the humanities side of the field of professional writing, through which topics often addressed in the discipline are understood as rhetorical enterprises concerned with symbols and arguments rather than as simple writing formulas to follow. Students explore various types of print and digital expression, including textual, visual, and audiovisual expression in real-world and online environments. Through the process and strategies of critical close reading and persuasive writing about these expressions, the minor allows students to explore how texts create meaning in real-world and digital venues (such as the process and influence of “virality” on the speed with which a message spreads or the ways that writers must adapt traditional persuasive appeals, such as logos, ethos, pathos, and Kairos, for digital audiences) and what this meaning can help them discover about the nature of human experience and expression in professional contexts. Students need majors and/or minors to fulfill the R, A, and L areas to complete the REAL Curriculum requirements.
