Foreign Languages, B.S.


Foreign Languages Major


Students pursuing a Foreign Languages major choose the Modern Foreign Languages Concentration.

REAL Curriculum


In order to fulfill the REAL Curriculum requirements, students need additional majors and/or minors to fulfill the R, E, A, and L areas.

REAL Foundational Requirements


REAL Cornerstone Requirements


Writing Intensive (WI) Courses (6 credits)

Writing Intensive courses are denoted below with a (WI). Two writing intensive courses are required to graduate, with at least one at the 300- or 400-level.

General Education Requirements


General Education courses will be denoted below with a (GE). Students are required to take at least 30 credit hours of general education designated courses within their degree requirements.

Major Requirements (66-69 credits)


B.S. Requirements


The Bachelor of Science requirements are satsifed through the professional education courses required for licensure.

Modern Foreign Language Concentration


Required Courses (30 credits)


Majors must choose one of the following:*

30 semester hours with at least 24 hours above the intermediate level of French, which must include FREN 361 or FREN 362, and at least one course on the 400 level;

or

30 semester hours with at least 24 hours above the intermediate level of German, which must include at least one course on the 400 level;

or

30 semester hours with at least 24 hours above the intermediate level of Spanish, which must include SPAN 320 and at least two courses on the 400 level.

Note(s):


* Students seeking Licensure through the Teacher Education Program (TEP) must choose the Spanish concentration.

Foreign Language Teaching Concentration Course Requirements (36-39 credit hours)


Licensure


Foreign Language Majors (Spanish concentration) who wish to earn licensure (certification) to teach must take and successfully complete 30 credit hours as part of the Spanish concentration in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature. Additional requirements include 36-39 credit hours of professional education coursework in the College of Education and Human Development (see below) and passing scores on the VA DOE mandated exams:

  • VCLA- Virginia Communication & Literacy Assessment
  • Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators Test (Mathematics)
  • Praxis II World Language: Content Knowledge exam

Students must graduate with a minimum overall GPA of 2.75. The licensure option satisfies the additional minor and/or major requirement associated with all Foreign Language majors at Radford University.
 

Additional Degree Requirements


To graduate with a major in Foreign Languages and Literatures, a student must have a grade point average of 2.75 or higher in all courses attempted in the major.

Open Credit Hours (52-54 credits)


These credits can be used to fulfill additional courses, majors, minors, and/or REAL Curriculum requirements, including Foundational Writing and Foundational Math.

Total Credits Needed for Degree 120
