Interdisciplinary Minor in Health and Aging (E, A)

Health and Aging is an interprofessional minor for students who are interested in specialized knowledge regarding biopsychosocial development in older adulthood. This minor is coordinated and directed by the School of Social Work and consists of a minimum of 18 semester hours and fulfills REAL areas E and A. 

REAL Curriculum


This minor fulfills the E and A areas of the REAL Curriculum. Students need majors and/or minors to fulfill the E and L areas to complete the REAL Curriculum requirements.

General Education Requirements


General Education courses will be denoted below with a (GE). Students are required to take at least 30 credit hours of general education designated courses within their degree requirements. The Interdisciplinary Minor in Health and Aging includes 6 general education credits.

Minor Requirements (18-21 credits)


Required Course (3 credits)


Students will be required to take one of the following two upper level course specifically related to aging.

Elective Courses (15-18 credits)


In addition to the courses listed below, any course identified by the student to have a significant focus on aging and/or issues of the elderly may be approved by the minor coordinator for a student’s program of study in the minor.

Humanistic and Artistic Expression Electives (9 credits)


Students must choose three electives from the following list. At least one must have a GE designation and one must be an upper level (300-400 level) course.

Cultural or Behavioral Analysis Electives (6-9 credits)


If students are taking PSYC 429 they must choose two electives from the following list, at least one of which must have a GE designation. If students are taking SOWK 425 they must choose three electives from the following list, at least one with a GE designation and one that is upper level (300-400 level).
