Master of Fine Arts Degree
Core Course Requirements for both concentrations; all online. 9 hrs. Course Requirements for Studio Art Concentration 61 hrs.
9 credit hours are required in an online core. The remainder of the concentration consists of 40 credit hours in studio research and 12 credit hours in professional practices. Students must pass first-year and second-year reviews, and the degree culminates with a written thesis, M.F.A. exhibition, and a thesis defense.
Studio and Research 40 hrs.
Thesis and Professional Practices 12 hrs.
First and Second Year Review
A first year and second year review are required of all MFA – students in the Studio Art concentration. The reviews will be scheduled by the department and the results will be reported to the Graduate College. Students are permitted up to two attempts at each review. The first review should be attempted during the term in which the student is enrolled in their 18th credit hour in the program. Students must pass the first year review before they are eligible to take the second year review. The second year review must be attempted during the term in which the student is enrolled in the 36th credit hour in the program. Students must successfully complete both reviews in order to be eligible for graduation. If a student fails either review on the second attempt, the student will be dismissed from the program at the end of that term. Final Thesis Defense
A final thesis defense is required of all MFA students in the Studio Art concentration. The examination should occur during the student’s last semester and should be scheduled by the student and their thesis advisor at least two weeks before graduation. A final draft of the written thesis must be completed before defense and disseminated to the thesis committee for review. It is also best if the defense coincides with or occurs just prior to the student’s MFA exhibition.
Course Requirements for Design Thinking 60 hrs.
The degree consists of 60 semester hours exhibited in course work, collaborative team work, an M.F.A. project or thesis and a final oral presentation.
In addition to the 9 core hours, an additional 51 hours are required. Design Thinking Concentration 51 hrs.
Final Thesis Defense
A final, thesis defense is required of all students in the Design Thinking concentration. This examination will be synchronous using an online medium. The examination should be taken during the last semester of the student’s graduate program and should be scheduled by the student and advisor at least two weeks before graduation.
Notes
MFA in Design Thinking will allow for 30% of transfer credits of 500 level courses to count towards a student’s degree.
