The Exercise Science Concentration prepares students to work within the fitness field and aligns with the Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist credential. The Physical and Health Education Teacher Education Concentration prepares students for teacher licensure or work within youth sport.

Exercise Science Concentration (A, L)
Students pursuing this concentration might want to own their own fitness facility, work in corporate wellness or pursue a graduate program in strength and conditioning to become a strength and conditioning coach at a university. Students will have the coursework to sit for the Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist credential. REAL Curriculum
This major fulfills the A and L areas of the REAL Curriculum. Students will analyze influences (physical, social, environmental, cultural, etc.) on health and aging. Students will apply knowledge and skills through case studies and during required fieldwork in practice settings to develop their professional competence. Students will reflect on their abilities in the field to develop a professional identity. REAL Foundational Requirements

Writing Intensive (WI) Courses (6 credits)
Writing Intensive courses are denoted below with a (WI). Two writing intensive courses are required to graduate, with at least one at the 300- or 400-level. The Exercise Science concentration includes 6 credits of writing intensive courses. General Education Requirements
General Education courses will be denoted below with a (GE). Students are required to take at least 30 credit hours of general education designated courses within their degree requirements. Concentration Requirements (60 credits)

Physical and Health Education Teacher Education Concentration (R, L)
This program of study prepares students to teach physical education and health education to young people in grades PreK-12. Students in this program earn a BS degree and a license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia. To be admitted to the Teacher Education Program, a student must meet minimum requirements for admission. Graduates obtain positions as teachers of physical and health education in schools and/or directors of community-based physical activity programs for youth. This major fulfills the R and L areas of the REAL Curriculum. Students will set objectives and develop, implement and evaluate data from lessons to inform their teaching practice. Throughout the curriculum, students apply requisite knowledge and skills for teaching in K-12 classroom settings. Students regularly reflect upon and work to improve their skills as a teacher. Physical and Health Education Teacher Education (27 credits)
Students wishing to pursue licensure in physical and health education must complete this pathway. Youth Physical Activity and Coaching Option (27 credits)
Students who do not wish to pursue licensure can select this pathway. Students must take ESHE 288, 388 and 389 and then can take courses as approved by advisor for the additional 18 credit hours. Required Outside Coursework (13 credits)
Students must select 18 credit hours of additional courses approved by advisor. Additional Degree Requirements
A 2.5 overall GPA and a 2.5 major GPA are required for admission to the teacher education program and student teaching. See the teacher education admission requirements and procedures. Open Credit Hours (26 credits)

Driver’s Education Add-On Endorsement
A Driver’s Education add-on endorsement can be received upon completion of HLTH 410 and HLTH 412 if the candidate is licensed in Secondary or K-12. |
