AHPT 840 - Management of Special Populations (Orthotics, Prosthetics, and Advanced Specialty Topics) Credits: (3) Instructional Method: Conduct of the Course: The format of the course may include but is not limited to lecture, case studies, small group, cooperative, and integrated learning experiences. Prerequisites: Successful completion of all prior coursework, or permission of department. This course introduces students to the management of special populations, with a major emphasis on the physical therapy management of persons with prosthetic and orthotic needs. Integral to the rehabilitation management of patients with prostheses and/or orthoses is the reinforcement of concepts related to kinesiology/biomechanics, normal gait, pathologic gait deviations, and integumentary management. The course assists students with developing skills to utilize knowledge of existing research regarding rehabilitation of mobility dysfunction in persons with prosthetic and/or orthotic needs. Emphasis is placed on clinical reasoning and decision-making.
