Exercise, Sport and Health Education, B.S.


Exercise, Sport and Health Education Major


All Exercise, Sport and Health Education (ESHE) majors must complete the core requirements in each area listed below. Refer to the ESHE concentration/option or major to determine exact requirements.

Concentration (77 credits)


Majors must choose one of the seven concentrations/options/majors shown below. These hours include any required field-work hours.

Major Grade Point Average (GPA)


The major GPA is calculated using all ESHE, HLTH and NUTR courses. The sports medicine major GPA also includes BIOL 310  and BIOL 311 .

Concentrations


Sport Administration Concentration (60 credits)


This area of study is designed for students interested in working in leadership positions within the fitness and/or sport industry. The Sport Administration concentration provides coursework and experiences related to the management and administration of athletics, coaching, and organizations within the sport industry.

Professional Fieldwork (6-13 credits)


Required of all majors in the Sport Administration Concentration

Major Grade Point Average (GPA)


A 2.5 cumulative, and in major, grade point average is required for fieldwork and graduation for this concentration. Refer to the fieldwork manual for additional information and requirements for fieldwork. All required ESHE and HLTH prefix courses that are offered for either 3 or 4 hours credit at the 300 and 400-course levels require a minimum overall GPA of 2.5 excluding 3 hour activity based courses.

Students should consult their academic advisors in selecting elective courses to complete the 120 semester hours required for graduation.

Fitness, Strength and Conditioning Concentration


This area of study is designed for students interested in working in leadership positions within the fitness and/or strength and conditioning industry. Students may choose either a Fitness option or Strength and Conditioning option. The Fitness option focuses on leadership in the fitness and wellness industry. It is appropriate for individuals interested in working in health clubs or corporate fitness facilities. The Strength and Conditioning option focuses on leadership in strength and conditioning and performance training programs. It is appropriate for people who want to train athletes for performance or pursue graduate work in the strength and conditioning field.

Strength and Conditioning Option


Exercise and Sport Science Concentration


This area of study is designed for students interested in advanced degree programs in the allied health field: physical therapy, occupational therapy, exercise physiology, cardiac rehabilitation, chiropractic medicine or other allied health disciplines. Students will be required to achieve and maintain a 3.0 or higher GPA to take 300- and 400-level ESHE/HLTH courses in the Sports Medicine Option. Program admission is competitive and requires an application for upper division. Students should see the sports medicine website (http://www.radford.edu/content/cehd/home/departments/eshe/majors/sports-medicine.html) for specific admittance and standards. This option also requires a capstone fieldwork experience.

Health Education and Health Promotion Concentration


This program of study prepares students to become Certified Health Education Specialists (CHES). This degree prepares students to develop the knowledge and skills to develop, implement, and evaluate health behavior change programs in order to promote and protect the health of individuals, communities, and the nation. Graduates of this program have the opportunity to work in communities, schools, health departments, worksites, or hospitals.

Physical and Health Education Teaching Concentration


This program of study prepares students to teach physical education and health education to young people in grades K-12. Students in this program earn a BS degree and a license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia. To be admitted to the Professional Education Program, a student must meet minimum requirements for admission. Graduates obtain positions as teachers of physical and health education in schools and/or directors of community-based physical activity programs for youth. Professional Education Requirements (20 credits)


In addition to the Foundation Courses listed above, 18 additional hours of courses in the College of Education and Human Development are required for licensure to teach in the State of Virginia. ESHE 453  is a student teaching experience in two clinical settings: one in an elementary school and the other in a high school.

Major Grade Point Average (GPA)


A 2.5 overall GPA and a 2.5 major GPA are required for admission to the teacher education program and student teaching. See the teacher education admission requirements  and procedures.

Major Grade Point Average (GPA)


A 2.50 overall GPA and a 2.50 major GPA are required for admission to the teacher program and student teaching. See the teacher education requirements on p. 101.

Driver’s Education Add-On Endorsement


A Driver’s Education add-on endorsement can be received upon completion of HLTH 410  and HLTH 412  if the candidate is licensed in Secondary or K-12.
