Music, B.S. (E, L)

The Bachelor of Science with a major in music provides for the study of music within a liberal arts framework. It is recommended that students who enroll in this program exhibit a high level of performance proficiency, as well as the commitment to develop this proficiency to the highest levels. While the B.S. program is intended to have some scholarly freedom with regard to class choices, the music faculty strongly recommends developing a path of study that will purposely and fully prepare students for an ever changing and increasingly challenging market. It is recommended that B.S. students choose elective courses in consultation with their academic advisors that could include emphases, such as:
Performance – Students focus on developing a high level of artistic performing abilities in their chosen area–instrument or voice.
Composition - Students focus on developing a unique creative voice through the acquisition of skills essential to music composition in all genres.

REAL Curriculum
This major fulfills the E and L areas of the REAL Curriculum. Students develop relevant skills to the music major through music coursework (Humanistic or Artistic Expression) by integrating methods/techniques and areas of inquiry in music that explore the human experience and Applied Learning by incorporating skills immediately applicable to the performance of music. Students need majors and/or minors to fulfill the R and A areas to complete the REAL Curriculum requirements.

Writing Intensive (WI) Courses (6 credits)
Writing Intensive courses are denoted with a (WI). Two writing intensive courses are required to graduate, with at least one at the 300- or 400-level.
General Education Requirements
General Education courses will be denoted below with a (GE). Students are required to take at least 30 credit hours of general education designated courses within their degree requirements. The Bachelor of Science in Music includes 11 general education credits.
Major Requirements (55-57 credits)
B.S. Degree (6-8 credits)
The B.S. degree requires completion of the B.S. Degree Cognate. 3-4 hours from Historical or analytical course(s) chosen from:
3-4 hours from Fine Arts laboratory/performance course(s) chosen from:
- ART 200- 300- or 400 level studio courses
- DNCE 160, DNCE 260 and technique courses
- THEA 105, 125
Music Core (49 credits)
Applied Music (12 credits)
Students must complete twelve (12) credits of applied music (minimum)
- 6 semesters of applied music
Music Theory (19 credits)
Music History (9 credits)
Additional Degree Requirements
To graduate with a Bachelor of Arts in Music, students must have at least a 2.0 cumulative GPA and a 2.5 GPA in the major. Major courses are defined as courses with the MUSC, MUSE, and MUSH prefixes.
Open Credit Hours (63-65 credits)
These credits can be used to fulfill additional courses, majors, minors, and/or REAL Curriculum requirements, including Foundational Writing and Foundational Math.
