    Prerequisites: Completion of MUSC 211  with a grade of “C” or better.
    Shaping features of texture, timbre, rhythm and tonal motion at various levels. Dissolution of tonality from late chromatic harmony through the emergence of 20th century techniques, including Impressionism, set theory, 12-tone technique, experimentation and neo-Impressionism.

  • MUSC 222 - Context-oriented Thinking in Music Therapy

    Instructional Method: Two hours lecture.
    Prerequisites: MUSC 163 , a declared major of Music Therapy, or permission of instructor.
    Provides students with an in-depth understanding of context-oriented thinking in music therapy, which will focus on using music therapy to empower clients, to address social justice issues and to engage the client’s community. Various populations and methods will be approached from an ecological orientation. Students will be provided with opportunities to think critically about when to use context-oriented thinking in music therapy. They will learn skills and techniques within this means of working with clients.

  
  • MUSC 226 - Experience-oriented Thinking in Music Therapy

    Instructional Method: Two hours lecture.
    Prerequisites: MUSC 163 , a declared major of Music Therapy, or permission of instructor.
    Provides students with an in-depth understanding of experience-oriented thinking in music therapy, which will focus on using music therapy to explore various experiences of being in music therapy. Various populations and methods will be approached from a reflexive process. Students will be provided with opportunities to think critically about when to use experience-oriented thinking in music therapy. They will learn skills and techniques within this means of working with clients.

    Practical approaches to problems and solutions related to the use of computers in music education, composition, performance, commercial recording and activities where the digital representation of sound is important. Focus on application development.

    Instructional Method: Three hours lecture.
    Survey and critical evaluation of music in podcasting as an art form, including the design and production of original material appropriate for Internet distribution. Considers use of music and text to express ideas and concepts which have relevance to personal, cultural, and social contexts. Analysis of formal structures appropriate to the medium.

  
  • MUSC 230 - Advanced Pro Tools and Music Production

    An advanced study of concepts and production techniques used with Pro Tools recording software; topics include industry-standard session organization, understanding and using effects processors and plug-ins, mixing with automation, advanced midi and sound editing, modern music reproduction, creating professional mixes, and mastering techniques.

  • MUSC 246 - Songwriting 2: Advanced Songwriting

    An advanced study of song forms, melodies, harmonies, and lyrics and their application to pop, rock, hip-hop, country and other trends in commercial music, as well as composition of songs in commercial music styles.

  • MUSC 291 - Topics in Arts and Entertainment Business

    Variable topic course. Will study major topics and issues in the arts and entertainment fields. The class content will draw from important and relevant industry issues, current events, and individual student interests and projects.   • MUSC 301 - Research Writing in Music Therapy (WI)

    Instructional Method: Three hours lecture.
    Prerequisites: Music therapy major or permission of instructor.
    This lecture-based course will serve as the writing intensive course requirement for music therapy majors and is an optional writing intensive course for other music related disciplines.  The course will focus on essential writing skills and writing mechanics of research in music. This course is intended to further develop students’ skills in critical thinking including how to recognize, analyze, and evaluate arguments in written and oral communication. This course is designed to further develop the skills outlined above through an understanding of research methods in business, music education, music therapy, and performance studies. Students will engage with different types of research (qualitative, arts-based, mixed methods, quantitative, historical), through critical evaluation of extant research related to their discipline of study. Students will design a small-scale study related to an area of their interest to present at the conclusion of the semester. This course will serve to help students develop competency in information literacy and encourage the creation of their own persuasive arguments.

  • MUSC 302 - Clinical Orientation in Music Therapy

    Instructional Method: Two hours lecture, two hours laboratory and one-two hours observation/ participation per week.
    Prerequisites: MUSC 102 , MUSC 202 , MUSC 313 , and MUSC 314 ; or permission of the instructor.
    This organized and structured experience in a clinical setting involves observation and participation in a clinical setting under the supervision of a board certified music therapist.

  • MUSC 303 - Field Studies IV: Music Therapy Ensemble

    Instructional Method: Activity
    Prerequisites: MUSC 161  /MUSC 162 , MUSC 164 , MUSC 168 MUSC 206 , MUSC 210 , MUSC 166 , MUSC 174 , MUSC 186 , music therapy major, upper-level standing, or permission of instructor
    This performance-based class will count as one of the small, uncoached, ensembles within the music department core curriculum. Students will engage with a music therapy clinical population with the intention of forming the ensemble, choosing and arranging the music, conducting the ensemble, and performing with the ensemble. The type of music chosen will depend on the needs of the clients and the clinical setting. Students must acquire 12 client-contact hours within the semester. Field Studies IV will culminate with a music therapy qualifying exam, used to evaluate functional musicianship, basic interview skills, and comprehensive knowledge of the music therapy professional competencies.

  • MUSC 308 - Social Media in the Music Industry

    Instructional Method: Three hours lecture.
    An intensive study of social media and promotion as applied to the various arts disciplines, especially the music industry. Areas addressed include research, segmentation of populations, target audiences, development of promotional materials, website creation, and planning and implementation of strategic social media campaigns.

    Performance of challenging choral literature of all styles and periods for soprano, alto, tenor and bass voices. Participation in various activities and concerts on and off campus. Joins with other university choral ensembles to form the RU Choral Union for the performance of extended masterworks. Open to qualified students of any major. Qualified members of this choir may perform contemporary a cappella music.

    This course will meet three hours per week with a blend of music therapy theory and practical development and application of functional music skills. Specific attention is given to piano, guitar, voice, and percussion technique as they apply to clinical populations.

    Supports students during their practicum experience. Group supervision models will be implemented to encourage students to learn from one another, allow students to practice various group supervision strategies and support one another as they approach the time to start applying for music therapy internships.   • MUSC 346 - Methods and Literature for School Bands

    Credits: (3)
    Instructional Method: Three hours lecture.
    Prerequisites: Completion of MUSC 352  and MUSC 354  with minimum grades of “C”.
    A survey of instructional methods and literature for beginning, intermediate and advanced school bands. Includes curriculum planning, rehearsal techniques, performance practices for various style periods and cultures. At least six hours of observation/participation in public school music classes and participation in Lab Band as conductor teacher and performer is required.

  
  • MUSC 352 - Growth and Development of the Music Learner

    Credits: (3)
    Instructional Method: Two hours lecture; one hour laboratory.
    A study of the musical, mental, physical, behavioral- emotional, and social growth characteristics of students and of individual differences among students. Course focuses on the relationship between human development and the music curriculum. Students will address state and national standards through peer instruction. Laboratory includes at least nine hours observation in schools, exercises in peer teaching, and uses of technology in music education.

    Students will learn about the history of song from the Renaissance through Classical eras.  Discussions and demonstrations will be used to model how vocal technique may be taught through this repertoire.  Students also will learn what to expect of young singer’s voices and how repertoire and other vocal literature may be used to address vibrato, posture, breath support and tone quality appropriately in teaching young singers of varying age groups.

    The Commercial Music Ensemble rehearses and performs popular and original music, creates music charts and instrumental/vocal arrangements, and records in a professional recording session environment.  Students gain valuable real-world experience in a collaborative setting playing in house bands, recording sessions and concerts.

  • MUSC 380 - The History and Pedagogy of Percussion

    Prerequisites: The student must have at least two semesters of applied percussion study.
    Many of the percussion students at RU are looking towards graduate work in percussion performance and pedagogy. As a result of this, it is important to offer an opportunity to enhance a student’s knowledge with regard to the history and pedagogy of percussion, considering there is limited time to do so during weekly lessons. The course would be a mixture of traditional lecture sessions, presentations, research, and a short performance followed by a critical discussion of the work performed.

    Collaborative Piano Ensemble will assign individual pianists to serve departmental collaboration needs. Students will be assigned by instructor to vocal or instrumental studios as needed, or to existing ensembles with need for a keyboard player.   • MUSC 460 - Church Accompanying

    Instructional Method: One hour lab.
    Prerequisites: Audition and instructor permission
    This course will prepare students to participate in a variety of church services on the keyboard.

    Students will study the various structures and sequences of different denominations and orders of worship, gain an appreciation for the role of music within each service, and develop keyboard skills (following a choir director, rehearsal techniques, improvisation on a melody, congregational hymn playing, basic organ skills) to best contribute to the service.

    The final project of the course will be students’ involvement in an actual service at a local church, demonstrating their preparation, performance skills, and collaborative spirit in aiding a congregation in worship.
