Design Studies in Professional Practice Minor (L)

Design Studies in Professional Practice Minor provides students the opportunity to prepare and identify career opportunities within the design profession or an allied field.  Students apply knowledge acquired within the field and professional interactions to reflect on their experiences. Students learn about practicing design in a global market and understanding the elements of business practices.

Learning experiences within the minor include: professional resume and cover letter preparation, applying active listening skills an interviewing techniques, producing clear objectives and goals to inform their professional career path, and identify career opportunities within the design fashion/interiors profession and/or allied professions. In addition, students will learn how to leverage their professional skills within the context of community service work.

REAL Curriculum


This minor fulfills the L area of the REAL Curriculum. This minor is designed to address the growing need for students to apply their knowledge in a professional setting. An internship component is required in order for students to gain “hands-on” experience and acquire real on-the-job learning experiences. Students will reflect and analyze their own strengths and weaknesses within the professional context of their internship experience.

General Education Requirements


General Education courses will be denoted below with a (GE). Students are required to take at least 30 credit hours of general education designated courses within their degree requirements. The Design Studies in Professional Practice minor includes 6 general education credits.

Note(s):


* To maximize credit usage, students are encouraged to take general education and/or writing intensive designated courses as their “L” designated elective. Some suggestions include ART 202  and ENGL 306 . Additional courses that are encouraged for the elective requirement are ITEC 145 , MGNT 223 , MGNT 330 , MGNT 361 , and MKTG 342 .

Additional Information


Students cannot receive a BS or BFA in a Design major and any additional minor in Design Studies.
