African American Studies is an interdisciplinary field that explores and critically examines the unique cultural, political, economic, and historical experiences of African Americans. In the African American Studies minor program, students take courses in a wide variety of disciplines, including sociology, history, English, and political science. Students develop their critical and analytical skills, increase their multicultural awareness, and have opportunities for applied learning experiences.
Students completing the minor in African American Studies are required to take three African American Studies (AAST) courses and four elective courses: two in the Social and Behavior Sciences, and two in the Arts and Humanities.

REAL Curriculum
This minor fulfills the E area of the REAL curriculum through the examination of African American life and culture. Students need majors and/or minors to fulfill the R, A, and L areas of the REAL curriculum.
REAL Cornerstone Requirements
Writing Intensive (WI) Courses (6 credits)
Writing Intensive courses are denoted below with a (WI). Two writing intensive courses are required to graduate, with at least one at the 300- or 400-level. The African American Studies minor includes 0-9 credits of writing intensive courses.
General Education Requirements
General Education courses will be denoted below with a (GE). Students are required to take at least 30 credit hours of general education designated courses within their degree requirements. The African American Studies minor includes 3-15 general education credits.
